Airtel Uganda has made a sizeable financial contribution to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). The telco presented a UGX34.8 billion cheque to the regulator, which has been earmarked to boost the country’s rural communications infrastructure development.
The contribution, which is 2% of Airtel’s annual gross revenue for the fiscal year ending in 2023, aligns with the Communications Act regulations and the terms of the telco’s license. The Act mandates that telecommunications operators allocate a portion of their yearly earnings to support the advancement of rural communications infrastructure within the country.
Hon. Nyombi Thembo, the recently appointed Executive Director of UCC, praised Airtel Uganda for its significant contribution to the telecommunications and ICT sectors in the country during a press briefing at UCC’s headquarters in Bugolobi.
“Airtel has been a force in communication development in Uganda,” said Nyombi. “I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the company for their contribution of UGX34.8 billion which will undoubtedly go a long way in bridging the digital divide and fostering inclusive growth and involvement across Uganda.” Adding “This underscores the understanding of the critical role Airtel plays in ensuring that the underserved population in our country gains access to vital communication services.”
Manoj Murali, Airtel Uganda’s managing director, reiterated the company’s dedication to providing dependable communication services throughout the country.
“Our commitment is demonstrated by our participation in the licensing regime and providing reliable communication services across Uganda,” said Manoj. “We do this because our role as technology enablers is to unlock the potential of Uganda as we connect people and businesses to opportunities.”
Manoj also commended the Commission for its continuous oversight and support in fostering access, equity, and the long-term viability of the telecommunications sector. UCC staff revealed that the regulator intends to utilize the UGX34.8 billion contribution from Airtel Uganda to boost the development of rural communications infrastructure, in underserved regions.
