The Fujifilm X100V has held the title of the top premium compact camera for some time. However, its successor, the Fujifilm X100VI, has now taken over. This sixth-generation model comes with superior features, enhanced performance, and remarkable image quality. It retains the beloved aspects of the X100 series, such as its classic design, traditional exposure dials, a sharp fixed 23mm f/2 lens, and the versatile hybrid viewfinder.
The X100VI has a 40MP sensor with unprecedented resolution, 6.2K video capability, and in-body image stabilization—a first for the series. It also includes Fujifilm’s most advanced autofocus system. It is capable of tracking a variety of subjects, including people, animals, birds, and vehicles. Essentially, this camera combines the best features of two excellent models, offering a compelling alternative to main cameras positioned in the same category.
While the X100VI features some updates, it still maintains a familiar look. The retro aesthetic remains, with only minor changes, such as a slight increase in weight to accommodate in-body stabilization. More weight is a worthy trade-off for the increased versatility that the stabilization offers.
Some features from the X100V, however, are less impressive in this new model. The single UHS-I SD card slot limits video and burst shooting capabilities. Weather-sealing still requires a lens adapter, and the 35mm equivalent focal length may feel restrictive for those who prefer wider shots. The X100VI stands out as a unique compact camera that sets itself apart.
With its 60MP full-frame sensor, the Leica Q3 might offer a more luxurious experience, and the Ricoh GR III may be more accessible and compact. Yet, for most users, the Fujifilm X100VI remains the preferred choice among premium compact cameras.
The Fujifilm X100VI costs UGX 6,150,000, which is justified by the premium positioning the Japanese manufacturer placed the camera in. To commemorate Fujifilm’s 90th anniversary, a special edition limited to 1,934 units each uniquely numbered is available for UGX 7445,000. In the UK, this edition is sold exclusively in-person at the London House of Photography starting April 6.
The X100VI continues the legacy of the X100 series, combining retro charm with modern functionality. Its brushed aluminum finish, traditional exposure controls, and hybrid viewfinder blend the analog experience with today’s digital expectations.
