President Yoweri Museveni has officially reopened Makerere University’s reconstructed Ivory Tower, marking a significant moment in the institution’s history. During the event, veteran politician Dr. Crispus Kiyonga was installed as the new Chancellor of Makerere University, replacing Professor Ezra Suruma, whose term ended in December 2023.

Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe shared the news of Dr. Kiyonga’s appointment, offering congratulations on behalf of the university. “We warmly welcome Dr. Kiyonga to Makerere University and look forward to his leadership in guiding this prestigious institution,” Nawangwe stated on social media.

Dr. Kiyonga, a former Minister of Defense, now serves as titular head of Uganda’s oldest university. He succeeds Prof. Ezra Suruma, who had been chancellor since January 2016 following his appointment by President Museveni in December 2015.

Other notable individuals who have previously held the position include Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera (2007-2015), Prof. Apollo Nsibambi (2003-2007), and political figures such as President Museveni himself (1986-2002), Apollo Milton Obote, and Idi Amin.

During the same event, President Museveni officiated the reopening of the iconic Ivory Tower, the university’s main administrative hub, which had been severely damaged by fire in September 2020. The newly restored building now features an expanded administrative wing, a basement museum, a service wing, and a business center.

During his remarks, President Museveni reflected on the university’s history and expressed his satisfaction with the restoration of the administration building. He also recalled the intellectual debates that took place in the university’s halls, mentioning notable figures like Professor Ali Mazrui and Justice George Kanyeihamba. “I am pleased to see this historic building brought back to life, and to have been part of this moment,” Museveni said.

He also praised Dr. Kiyonga’s contributions to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and his long-standing involvement in the country’s political landscape. “Dr. Kiyonga has been a key figure in our efforts since 1980 and continues to be a dedicated leader,” Museveni remarked.

The reopening of the Ivory Tower and the installation of a new Chancellor mark a new chapter for Makerere University, as it continues its mission of academic excellence and leadership in Uganda and beyond.
