The Government of Belguim has committed to providing both financial and technical expertise to support research in public universities. This is in the fields of agriculture, innovation, and tourism.
The announcement was made by Hugues Chantry, the Ambassador of Belgium to Uganda, during the International Scientific Research Conference. The event was hosted at Mountains of the Moon University in Fort Portal City.
The event was attended by university administrators, Belgian delegates, and seasoned professionals in the scientific domain. The three-day conference aimed at charting a course for the future of higher education, primarily by deploying research and innovation.
Professor Pius Coxwell Achanga, the Vice-Chancellor of Mountains of the Moon University, underscored the transformative potential of such events in creating positive change within communities.
Professor Achanga highlighted the commitment of Belgium towards fortifying research efforts in agriculture, innovation, and tourism within Uganda’s public universities.
In reiterating Belgium’s resolve, Ambassador Hugues Chantry stressed the urgent need for substantial funding to drive research activities. He pointed out that Mountains of the Moon University currently faces a deficit of 2.6 billion shillings to adequately support its research endeavors.
Eng. Dr. Ben Manyindo, Chairperson of the University Council at Mountains of the Moon University, emphasized the important role of adequate funding in fostering innovation. He added that this was important in tackling societal challenges through research.
“We recognize the critical role that research plays in shaping the future of our nation. Additional funding is essential to strengthen our research capabilities,” Dr. Manyindo emphasized.
Timothy Ssejoba, Commissioner for University Education, emphasized the importance of increased investment in research and innovation across Uganda’s higher education landscape.
Commissioner Ssejoba lauded the collaboration between Belgium and Uganda, mentioning its significance in advancing education and fostering holistic development.
