The reMarkable Paper Pro is a third-generation, distraction-free writing slate that offers a colour e-paper display and several other notable improvements. It measures 196.6 x 274.1 x 5.1mm, making it roughly an inch taller and a quarter-inch wider than its predecessor, the reMarkable 2. The new device has been designed to feel more minimalist with sharper lines and squarer corners that give the device some much-needed visual rigidity. The edge band has grooves that evoke the idea of holding a sheaf of paper in your hand and adds some grip to a device that is surprisingly thin.
The inside of the Paper Pro has been given a thorough upgrade, with a new 1.8GHz Cortex A53 processor paired with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. This is underpowered compared to any smartphone from the last decade, but good enough for a writing tablet. It’s still a big leap ahead of the reMarkable 2 (rM2), which had packed a 1.2GHz dual-core chip with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The battery is a lot larger, leaping up from the 3,000mAh on the rM2 to 5,030mAh for the reMarkable Paper Pro.
In use, the Paper Pro notices a leap in performance compared to its predecessor. The faster internals and display mean the experience is much more responsive and snappy, with far less delay between action and result.
The Paper Pro uses a modified version of E Ink’s Gallery 3 technology called “Canvas Color,” which can be combined to make eight solid colors (Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, White and Black) which can be tweaked to 20,000 different shades.
There’s no big difference in readability between the Paper Pro (229 ppi) compared to its predecessor’s (226 ppi), but the smaller, older device has sharper text when you’re looking at it. Because of the new tech crammed inside the Paper Pro, scrolling speeds are much faster.
The Paper Pro is the first reMarkable with a backlight, which is “better late than never.” This feature allows users to use the device in dark rooms or airplanes without stress or eye strain.
The reMarkable Paper Pro is available for purchase at UGX 2,162,000 with the standard Marker and UGX 2,349,000 with the Marker Plus. A case is available for UGX 333,000, but a full leather version costs UGX 670,000.
