MTN Uganda Adds Electric Vehicle to its Fleet to Promote Sustainability

By Mark Kawalya

In a move towards a more environmentally conscious future, MTN Uganda has acquired a test electric vehicle from Motorcare Uganda. This significant step is in line with the company’s ambitious goals set forth in its Ambition 2025 strategy, which places great emphasis on creating shared value and integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into its core operations.

The introduction of the electric vehicle into MTN Uganda’s fleet signifies an important step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to the global fight against climate change. The company understands the urgency of transitioning away from fossil fuel-driven vehicles and their associated consequences, aiming at gradually replacing its entire fleet with electric vehicles upon achieving a successful outcome from the testing phase.

By embracing sustainable practices, MTN Uganda hopes to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, as outlined in its sustainability framework.

A statement from MTN reads, “The company remains dedicated to improving energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing water and waste management across its operations. Through its partnership with Motorcare Uganda Ltd, MTN can leverage advanced sustainable technologies that align with its net-zero objectives,”

MTN Uganda has consistently prioritized ESG practices, as demonstrated by its commitment to eco-responsibility. Notably, the transition of over 64% of its sites to hydroelectricity has already resulted in a 4.4% reduction in carbon emissions (tCO2), underscoring the company’s dedication to managing environmental resources sustainably for the benefit of all.

Sylvia Mulinge, CEO of MTN Uganda, expressed the company’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, saying, “”We firmly believe that our growth and success should not come at the expense of the planet’s future. By gradually replacing our fleet with electric vehicles, we aim to drive a positive environmental impact in the communities we serve while inspiring others to join us in creating a sustainable future.”

MTN Uganda’s adoption of electric vehicles shows the company’s dedication to championing sustainability and preserving the well-being of the planet.
