Freza Nanotech Limited, a startup based in Uganda, has received the prestigious 2024 Innovation Award from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The company developed an innovative approach to developing a solution designed to enhance the preservation of fruits and minimize postharvest losses. The award ceremony was held at the FAO headquarters in Rome during the 176th Session of the FAO Council.
Freza Nanotech’s innovation uses an organic formulation that effectively inhibits the enzyme phospholipase D. The enzyme plays a crucial role in the ripening process of fruits and spoilage after a certain duration. This breakthrough technology can potentially extend the shelf life of fresh produce by as much as 30 days. By providing a solution that does not emit harmful substances, Freza Nanotech addresses significant problems within the food supply chain. The innovation leads to reduced waste and increased access to fresh fruits for consumers. This advancement has the potential to enhance food security, stimulate economic growth, and promote environmental sustainability.
During the award presentation, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu said, “Freza Nanotech’s endeavors illustrate how agrifood systems can achieve productivity alongside sustainability. They will benefit nutrition and livelihood improvements in Uganda and beyond.” He further emphasized the importance of highlighting innovative solutions like this for their positive effects on production, nutrition, and the environment, all while ensuring that no one is left behind.
Freza Nanotech’s technology has been especially beneficial for small-scale farmers in Uganda. The solution has helped them to decrease postharvest losses and enhance their productivity while stabilizing market prices for fruits. As a result, consumers are now able to access fresh produce at lower prices, while the reduction in food waste contributes positively to environmental conservation.
Mugisha Gift Arnold, the Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Freza Nanotech, said that receiving this award recognizes the dedication of their team. It also emphasizes the potential of innovative technologies to address global issues, especially in relation to food security and sustainability. He expressed that their technology is playing a vital role in enhancing food availability and fostering economic advancement, directly impacting the daily lives of individuals.
