Underserved Schools in Uganda Benefit from Technology Driven Learning

The digital revolution is reshaping traditional learning models particularly in underserved regions in Uganda. In these areas, dated learning methods are being replaced by technology-driven approaches, empowering students and teachers alike. With low access to resources such as textbooks, the introduction of computers is accelerating learning.

St. Mary’s Assumpta Girls School in Adjumani district, benefited from a donation of computers by the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) has seen a transformation in the educational experience. High-speed internet coupled with digital educational resources have revolutionized teaching methods, providing students with a wider access to knowledge.

This inclusion of technology has not only enriched the curriculum but has also fostered collaboration and flexibility in learning.

Keliki Ruthrock Queen, a student at St. Mary’s Assumpta Girls School, highlights the positive impact of digital learning. Through the school’s ICT laboratory, she explores subjects like mathematics and physics in engaging ways. This has enhanced her understanding and application of these subjects.

The school’s success is shown in part by their victory in the 2023 Climate Change debate championship. Online resources enabled them to aptly prepare for the competition. Headmistress Sr. Abiyo Rebecca praises the role the internet has played in enabling students to excel academically while nurturing positive attitudes.

Recognizing the necessity to bridge the digital divide, Airtel Africa and UNICEF have partnered to provide computers and 4G Wi-Fi connectivity to select schools in Uganda. This initiative aims to empower students in hard-to-reach areas, facilitating a conducive environment for learning and innovation. 

Charity R. Bukenya, CSR Manager at Airtel Uganda, emphasizes the transformative potential of digital learning in shaping the future of education. The partnership seeks to connect 100 schools, particularly in regions like West Nile and Karamoja, ensuring that no student is left behind in the digital age.

The Airtel Africa-UNICEF partnership is driving significant change in Uganda’s educational landscape, reflecting a shared commitment to providing essential resources for a brighter future. Through digital learning, underserved schools are not only catching up with global educational standards but are also paving the way for a generation of empowered learners.
